ASTANA – Baku: The Presidents of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan signed a strategic agreement on the integration of the energy systems of the three countries، on the sidelines of the COP 29 World Climate Summit, Heads of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Ilham Aliyev and Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed an Agreement on Strategic partnership in the field of green energy production and transmission between the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Uzbekistan.
President Tokayev said: “This event will mark a new page in the history of the common desire for sustainable development، and the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement is an important stage of trilateral cooperation in the development of the regions of Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The document opens up new opportunities for the integration of energy systems of our states, as well as the creation of reliable corridors for the supply of environmentally friendly energy to European and other markets. Kazakhstan plays an extremely important role here as a large transit territory. The practical results of this Agreement will also contribute to the development of the Middle Corridor as a “green bridge” connecting our economies. Close cooperation in this key area will activate the exchange of experience and advanced technologies between the three states, and will contribute to further strengthening our energy security,” the President noted.
Strategic Partnership
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the signing of the Agreement on Strategic Partnership is a milestone stage of trilateral cooperation in the development of Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus. It reveals new opportunities for the integration of energy systems of three countries and building reliable corridors to deliver clean energy to the European and other markets. Kazakhstan plays a crucial role as a large transit territory. Its outcomes will contribute to developing the Middle Corridor as a green bridge to connect the three nations’ economies. He added close cooperation in this key sphere speeds up the exchange of practices and latest technologies between the three states and will contribute to further strengthening the countries’ energy security.
President Tokayev, said:” striving for carbon neutrality, “green” energy is a priority, and we are actively working to reduce dependence on fossil resources, develop technological innovations and create an infrastructure capable of supporting our environmental sustainability. Agreements have been reached between Kazakhstan and foreign partners on the implementation of green projects with a total capacity of 43 GWT”.
Opportunities for Integrating
According to the Akorda press service, this opens up new opportunities for integrating the countries’ energy systems and creating reliable corridors to supply green energy to the European and other markets.
Tokayev stressed that Kazakhstan prioritizes green energy in its strive for carbon neutrality and said “We are working to reduce dependence on fossil resources, developing technological innovations, and creating infrastructure capable of supporting our environmental sustainability. Kazakhstan has reached agreements with foreign partners on green projects with a total capacity of 43 gigawatts (GW)”.
President Mirziyoyev highlighted that the wind and solar energy that will be transmitted would help mitigate the impact on the climate.
Energy ministers of the three countries and Saudi Arabia also signed an executive program to cooperate in green energy development and transfer.
Fraternal Relations
President Ilham Aliyev noted that today’s agreement takes the fraternal relations and strategic partnership between the three countries to a new level, and said: “The regions of Central Asia and the Caucasus act synchronously in many issues, including in the area of developing “green” energy. We know about the big plans and the results already achieved in creating renewable energy sources in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan”.
In turn, the President of Uzbekistan stated that this agreement pursues not only an economic goal, but also represents a common contribution to the future, and said: “I would like to especially note the environmental significance of this project. The energy that will be transmitted is wind and solar energy, which will help mitigate the impact on the climate. In this way, we support joint efforts to protect the climate within the framework of the Paris Agreement and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.
In addition, in the presence of the heads of state, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev, the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Parviz Shahbazov, the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov and the Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud signed the Executive Program on cooperation in the field of development and transfer of green energy.
